This copper mine already known in Etruscan and Roman times reached its peak in 1800 becoming the largest and most famous mine in Europe.
It boasts 35km of tunnels that lead into the bowels of the earth more than 300 meters deep, part of which can still be visited thanks to excursions organized by the "Museo delle Miniere".
The building shown in the photo is "Pozzo Alfredo" which since 1855 was the main mine shaft, whose structure has remained well preserved to this day and also boasts the presence inside of machinery used during the period of activity.
